Title: Inheritance Pdf A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love

A Washington Post, Vulture, Bustle, Real Simple, PopSugar, and LitHub Most Anticipated Book of 2019 "Profound... The true drama of Inheritance is not Shapiro’s discovery of her father’s identity but the meaning she makes of it...Shapiro’s account is beautifully written and deeply moving — it brought me to tears more than once."—Ruth Franklin, The New York Times Book Review"Inheritance reads like an emotional detective story...Shapiro is skilled at spinning her personal explorations into narrative gold... Life has handed her rich material. But her books work not just because the situations she writes about are inherently dramatic and relatable. Her prose is clear and often lovely, and her searching questions are unfailingly intelligent... The relevance of Shapiro's latest memoir extends beyond her own personal experience. Inheritance broaches issues about the moral ramifications of genealogical surprises."—NPR"Poignant...Origin stories are among the most powerful that exist because they shape people’s identities and anchor them—to a culture, a place and other people. When stories about the past change, Ms. Shapiro argues, so does the future...In losing the genetic connection to the man who raised her, Ms. Shapiro gained new insight into their enduring bond."—The Wall Street Journal"A profound and exquisitely rendered exploration of identity and the true meaning of family."—People"Dani Shapiro can tell this story like no one else could... Smart, psychologically astute and not afraid to tell it like it is."—USA Today"An incredible work of investigation and self-reflection... A thrilling and emotional ride... The story’s beating heart is Shapiro herself... Written with generosity and honesty, Inheritance takes the modern phenomenon of casual DNA testing and builds a deeply personal narrative around it. The result is a vital, necessary read from a talented author."—Paste"A remarkable, dogged, emotional journey... Inheritance reads like a mystery, unfolding minute by minute and day by day. The reader experiences the grief, surprises and setbacks right along with the author... Shapiro’s book is a wise and thorough examination of how this news affected her. She is a good guide for the bombshells that are yet to explode for so many families."—Minneapolis Star Tribune“A fascinating and pertinent look into the murky world of medical ethics, as well as the kind of profound, insightful look into the meaning of love and connection that we’ve come to expect from Shapiro.” —Nylon"An introspective mystery." —Elle"In Inheritance, Shapiro movingly reckons with identity and family secrets."—Real Simple"Fascinating... With thoughtful candor, [Shapiro] explores the ethical questions surrounding sperm donation, the consequences of DNA testing, and the emotional impact of having an uprooted religious and ethnic identity. This beautifully written, thought-provoking genealogical mystery will captivate readers from the very first pages."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)"For all the trauma that the discovery put her through, Shapiro recognizes that what she had experienced was 'a great story'—one that has inspired her best book." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Page after page, Shapiro displays adisarming honesty and an acute desire to know the unknowable." —Booklist (starred review)“Inheritance is Dani Shapiro at her best: a gripping genetic detective story, and a meditation on the meaning of parenthood and family.  It raises profound questions about the quandaries and responsibilities engendered by our newfound ability to know what—and whom—we are made of.” —Jennifer Egan, author of Manhattan Beach    “With Inheritance, Dani Shapiro tells a startling story of origins—their deep reach and their lasting reverberations. This book reads like a beautiful, lived novel, moving and personal and true.” —Meg Wolitzer, author of The Female Persuasion “When Dani Shapiro discovers, purely by accident, that the father who raised her was not her biological father, she embarks upon a profound journey of understanding.  What is ancestry? What is identity? Inheritance is a compulsively-readable investigation into selfhood that burrows to the heart of what it means to accept, to love, and to belong.” —Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See   “Inheritance is an extraordinary memoir that speaks to themes as current as today’s headlines and as old as human history. With unflinching curiosity and candor, Dani Shapiro explores the mystery of her own lineage as she questions the notion of lineage itself: What makes a father a father? And how are we shaped by our family lore? This beautifully crafted book is full of wisdom and heart, showing that what we don’t know about our parents may not be as important as what we do.” —Will Schwalbe, author of Books for Living and The End of Your Life Book Club“Identity is frail business, and in her searing story, Dani Shapiro makes the most disquieting discovery: that everything, from her lineage, to her father, down to her very own sense of self is an astounding error.  How do we live with ourselves after finding we are not who we thought we were? The answer is not disquieting.  It is beautiful.”—Andre Aciman, author of Call Me by Your Name  DANI SHAPIRO is the author of the memoirs Hourglass, Still Writing, Devotion, and Slow Motion and five novels including Black & White and Family History. Also an essayist and a journalist, Shapiro's short fiction, essays, and journalistic pieces have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, Tin House, One Story, Elle, Vogue, O, The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, the op-ed pages of the New York Times, and many other publications. She has taught in the writing programs at Columbia, NYU, the New School, and Wesleyan University; she is cofounder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano, Italy. She lives with her family in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“A gripping genetic detective story, and a meditation on the meaning of parenthood and family.” —Jennifer Egan, author of Manhattan Beach

From the acclaimed, best-selling memoirist and novelist—“a writer of rare talent” (Cheryl Strayed)—a memoir about the staggering family secret uncovered by a genealogy test: an exploration of the urgent ethical questions surrounding fertility treatments and DNA testing, and a profound inquiry of paternity, identity, and love.

What makes us who we are? What combination of memory, history, biology, experience, and that ineffable thing called the soul defines us?
In the spring of 2016, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA for analysis, Dani Shapiro received the stunning news that her father was not her biological father. She woke up one morning and her entire history--the life she had lived--crumbled beneath her.
Inheritance is a book about secrets--secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman's urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history. It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in--a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover.

Mixed feelings all around As a medical student in the 1970s, I had classmates who picked up a little extra money by anonymously donating sperm for artificial insemination. The practice was normal by that point, moving away from the deep secrecy that shadowed Dani Shapiro's conception and childhood. Her reactions to the discovery of her concealed paternity and her search for meaning struck me as off-topic in what I'd expected to be a book about unraveling the mystery of her origins in a much more concrete way. That part was so quick and easy -- not the detective story I had anticipated. The rest was still a tale of mystery, but on a psycho-social plane. Who lied? Why? Who suspected the truth? How could Dani have ignored the hints? What does it mean to lose an identity that is tied to a false genealogy? How should an anonymous sperm donor react to being unmasked by DNA?Extensive introspection wasn't what I thought I had signed up for when I bought this book, but it turned out to be fascinating enough that I read it in one sitting.Relatable As someone who discovered thru my Ancestry DNA test close to age 40 that I was the product of artificial insemination, this story indeed struck a chord with me. Contrary to one of the comments above about there not being secrecy in the 1970s, there was indeed secrecy well into the 1980s regarding the use of donor sperm from med students/residents and the practice of artificial insemination. There are no records available to many donor-conceived adults conceived thru the late 1980s. Recipient parents were told that secrecy was of the utmost importance and never to tell the children conceived this way. It astounds me that so little thought was going into a practice that was creating human beings. Dani eloquently writes about feelings and deeply personal reflections that I myself have felt. Please remember that donor-conceived people are people with feelings and it is a basic human right to want to know where you came from. We did not ask to be created this way. If you know someone who is donor conceived or you yourself are, I highly recommend this book!If there was a surprise in your DNA results, this book is definitely for you... I went into this book knowing it was a memoir (and that I don't usually read or particularly like those). But like the author, my DNA results turned up a few surprises and so I was very curious about someone else's journey... So bear in mind that might be the reason why I loved it so much. This book is really an exploration of the absolutely unexpected and often profound feelings we have around what makes us who we are and our identity. The author wrestles with the questions about this that are becoming something that many people are now unexpectedly (or even expectedly) grappling with. Watching her struggle with how her biological vs. social ancestry have defined her was truly engrossing, and has a lot to bring to the conversation about what exactly makes us who we are (something that is really just now starting to be explored in the context of how common DNA testing has become). But in this brave new world where we can now spit in a tube and see the exact genes that make up who we are biologically, identity has become a lot more complicated, as are the stories we tell ourselves to go along with it. In the end I found her story incredibly touching, disturbing, satisfying, and much more familiar than I think I would have preferred...

The New Rules of War Pdf

ISBN: B0756DWQR7
Title: The New Rules of War Pdf Victory in the Age of Durable Disorder

"Stunning. Sean McFate is a new Sun Tzu."

-Admiral James Stavridis (retired), former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO

Some of the principles of warfare are ancient, others are new, but all described in The New Rules of War will permanently shape war now and in the future. By following them Sean McFate argues, we can prevail. But if we do not, terrorists, rogue states, and others who do not fight conventionally will succeed—and rule the world.

The New Rules of War is an urgent, fascinating exploration of war—past, present and future—and what we must do if we want to win today from an 82nd Airborne veteran, former private military contractor, and professor of war studies at the National Defense University.

War is timeless. Some things change—weapons, tactics, technology, leadership, objectives—but our desire to go into battle does not. We are living in the age of Durable Disorder—a period of unrest created by numerous factors: China’s rise, Russia’s resurgence, America’s retreat, global terrorism, international criminal empires, climate change, dwindling natural resources, and bloody civil wars. Sean McFate has been on the front lines of deep state conflicts and has studied and taught the history and practice of war. He’s seen firsthand the horrors of battle and understands the depth and complexity of the current global military situation.

This devastating turmoil has given rise to difficult questions. What is the future of war? How can we survive? If Americans are drawn into major armed conflict, can we win? McFate calls upon the legends of military study Carl von Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, and others, as well as his own experience, and carefully constructs the new rules for the future of military engagement, the ways we can fight and win in an age of entropy: one where corporations, mercenaries, and rogue states have more power and ‘nation states’ have less. With examples from the Roman conquest, World War II, Vietnam, Afghanistan and others, he tackles the differences between conventional and future war, the danger in believing that technology will save us, the genuine leverage of psychological and ‘shadow’ warfare, and much more. McFate’s new rules distill the essence of war today, describing what it is in the real world, not what we believe or wish it to be.

George Kennan + jump wings = Sean McFate As a former State Department Foreign Service Officer and a retired CIA Operations Officer, I have to say that this is the book I've been waiting for to bridge the gap between strategic theory and practice. Dr. McFate has walked the walk - from his time as an officer in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division to working as a private military contractor, to his studies at Harvard's Kennedy School and beyond - Dr. McFate understands the changing nature of the global security landscape because he's studied it and fought on it. He points out the issues with large standing military forces and why, despite their great power, they are seldom used to win the conflicts in which most nations are currently engaged. He explains the most likely future of conflict - warfare in the shadows fought across non-traditional battle spaces, using (ideally) all levers of national power. He discusses the return of mercenary forces, and how non-state actors should be dealt with by international powers that have often been stymied by them. While studying national security strategy at Georgetown and National Defense University, I always gravitated to classes taught by professors who had experience both in global security theory and the real world: be it military, diplomacy, espionage, or high level policy-making. Dr. McFate covers all of these areas and more in his latest book. "The New Rules of War", should be on every international security practitioner's bookshelf. An Essential Guide to the Age of Durable Disorder The New Rules of War is an outstanding am long-overdue corrective to modern American strategic thinking, which remains obsessed with technology and the drive for decisive victory using conventional military force. It is not without flaws, but these are more than offset by the scythe that McFate brings to the conventional wisdom.McFate’s essential premise is that conventional warfare is dead and that strategists need to focus on the tools that our adversaries use to circumvent conventional strength. This is not in itself a groundbreaking assertion—its become a de rigueur statement amongst strategists since the rise of insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. But as McFate points out, the chorus of voices making this point has done nothing to change the military’s emphasis on technical solutions to non-technical problems. This has only worsened since DoD reprioritized great power competition. McFate’s understanding of the coming “durable disorder” and the changing character of warfare is refreshing and should be considered deeply and at length by all involved in defense policy. The book’s imperfections come not in McFate’s assessments, but in his tone and style. He often comes across as overly polemical, almost as though he has an axe to grind. While this doubtless makes for quicker reading--perhaps especially to a lay audience--it leads to blanket statements that undermine the strength of his arguments. For example, McFate dismisses the utility of Clausewitz to discussions of modern conflict, labeling him the “high priest of conventional warfare,” despite having recapitulated Clausewitz’s own distinction between the immutable nature of war and the changing character of warfare only a few paragraphs earlier. This is sloppy: while Clausewitz’s discussion on the conduct of warfare from the Napoleonic era is obviously divorced from conflict today, his understanding of war’s political nature, and that its conduct is governed by the blending of passion, reason, and chance remain as timeless as ever. Indeed McFate’s whole book could be read as an answer to the Prussian’s statement that the first and most important act of strategy is to understand the nature of war one is engaging in, neither mistaking it for nor attempting to change it into something alien to its nature.Similar statements are sprinkled throughout the book, but they pale in comparison to the fresh thinking he brings to the table. Ultimately, the US and its allies are doomed to suffer failed strategies and increasing insecurity unless they understand, as McFate does, that the utility of conventional force is declining and that new method of advancing the national interest are required.

Helps me learn the concepts needed So far I like it. I am not concerned about the difficulty of the test as much as training my brain to think differently and under stand the processes of what I am solving. That’s what this book does it teaches me the steps I will need when these problems arrive. Its not about memorizing but about learning what applications to use for specific questions. This books does a good job of teaching that. The explanations help me make logical connections between what I am seeing and what I need to do next to start solving the problem.like question one is not at all related to answer ... 0 stars...I was excited cause when I read through the "Reading" section I did the test and wanted to see what I needed to study further. The answers do not match up to the questions...like question one is not at all related to answer 1 given in the last pages of the book. Waste off money and invested study time. Do not buy! For the program I am entering they suggested Test.com....study guides, and $20 for the 300 question practice test...I should of listened to themLove it I am required to take a TEAS test to enter my nursing program, it was a blessing when my advisor recommended this book and I went ahead an ordered it from amazon. She was not kidding, its, its simple to read but full of detailed information. Not to mention after little info it gives you practice questions related to that part.Highly recommend it :)
